PLC is a programmable logic controller, a kind of electronic computer. It is used to automate technological processes. The controller can work autonomously for a long time in harsh environmental conditions with little or no human intervention and serious maintenance and is designed to work in real-time systems.

PLC types:

Basic
Programmable (smart) relays
Software based on IBM PC-compatible computers (English SoftPLC),
Based on the simplest microprocessors (i8088 / 8086/8051, etc.)
ECM (Electronic Engine Control System).

PLC consists of the following parts:

central microcircuit (microcontroller, or FPGA microcircuit), with the necessary piping
Real Time Clock Subsystem
nonvolatile memory
serial I / O interfaces (RS-485, RS-232, Ethernet)
protection and voltage conversion circuits at PLC inputs and outputs

Usually, an input or output cannot be immediately connected to the corresponding output of the central chip. These outputs are characterized by low voltage levels, typically 3.3 to 5 volts. PLC inputs and outputs should normally be operated with 24 VDC or 220 VAC. Therefore, between the output and the output of the microcircuit, it is necessary to provide amplifying and protective elements.
